Description: Create designs in wood! Marquetry is the art of creating imagery by cutting and fitting thin pieces of wood together. These designs are then veneered to a solid core to be used in making furniture or decorative panels. This class is an opportunity to explore an ancient art form that has many contemporary applications. We will explore several marquetry techniques, focusing on the double-bevel method of marquetry. This highly accurate technique eliminates gaps around the individual pieces of the marquetry picture. The process is actually quite simple and can be done with a minimum of tools, yet it yields amazing results. Matthew will teach the basics of marquetry through demonstration, exercises, and discussion. Each participant will complete projects using various sawing techniques and materials, beginning with the artwork, working through the marquetry process, and applying a finish to the completed design. Also discussed will be applications for marquetry, use of hot-sand shading, preparations for glue-up, adhesives, vacuum press and veneer press techniques, and advanced techniques for larger applications. This class is appropriate for anyone interested in creating imagery in wood and is an opportunity to explore an ancient art form that has many practical uses as a design element in artwork created today. This is a hands-on class. You will make several marquetry designs during the class and leave with the tools that you need to continue producing marquetry on your own. Instructor: Matthew Werner is a master furnituremaker and marquetarian who was trained at the College of the Redwoods - Fine Woodworking Program. He was recently profiled on “Wood Works”, a Santa Cruz Community TV series about local Master Craftsmen. His marquetry-enhanced woodwork has been seen locally in window exhibits at the Rittenhouse Building in downtown Santa Cruz, and also during the annual Open Studios Art Tour. This summer his work will appear in an exhibit at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. His work is shown in galleries throughout the western US. Several of his marquetry-embellished cabinets were featured in the book “500 Cabinets”, from Lark Publishing (2010). Matthew is a patient and engaging teacher who finds joy in passing on skills and knowledge.
